Modafinil Commonly Used to Enhance Cognitive Performance
Modafinil is commonly used to enhance cognitive performance, a practice known as neuroenhancement. Various studies indicate that it improves memory, attention, and learning in healthy individuals subjected to sleep deprivation or simulated night shifts. In addition, it increases accuracy on a number-recall task and reduces interference on the Stroop test.
It is a stimulant
Cognitive enhancement has become a major focus of translational neuroscience, and drugs that improve the brain’s memory/learning circuits by increasing dopamine, glutamate (neuronal excitation), and norepinephrine activity have shown promise as cognitive enhancers. Non-medical use of these drugs has been on the rise among high school and college students, causing concern over the safety and ethics of cognitive enhancement in healthy people.
A recent study found that modafinil 200 australia, a wakefulness-promoting drug that shares some similarities with psychostimulants like methylphenidate (MPH) and amphetamine, may be able to enhance cognition by elevating hypothalamic histamine levels and increasing dopamine reuptake transporter occupancy.
The study included a control group of participants who were given placebo and an experimental arm where participants were administered caffeine, MPH, or modafinil prior to completing a series of cognitive tests. The cognitive testing began 90 min after stimulant ingestion, and heart rate and blood pressure were monitored throughout the experiment.

Modafinil is a pharmacological agent approved for the treatment of narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, but has also been used off label as a cognitive enhancer. This use raises concerns about possible abuse and addiction. It is known to have fewer side effects than classic psychostimulants such as amphetamine and methylphenidate. However, it is not fully understood how this drug works and the exact mechanism of its waking effect.
The present study demonstrated that modafinil improved performance in all PVT parameters and VigTrack mean tracking error starting at T +2 h after administration. This improvement was more prominent with modafinil than caffeine, reflecting the longer Tmax and T1/2 of modafinil compared to caffeine (30-120 min and 4-6 h respectively).
During blood-oxygen-level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) performed while subjects underwent an emotion information processing task that activates the amygdala, as well as two prefrontally dependent cognitive tasks, WM and VAC, modulation of BOLD signal in the frontal cortex by modafinil was observed. In addition, a reduction of reactivity to threatening stimuli was also noted in the anterior cingulate, a brain region implicated in anxiety.
These findings suggest that Modalert Australia may be an effective cognitive enhancer after limited sleep deprivation. Future studies should evaluate the pharmacokinetic properties of modafinil and its metabolites in the context of varying sleep deprivation.
It is a sedative
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting oral agent approved to treat the excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. It works by stimulating the hypocretin-orexin system in the brain to improve wakefulness. It is also used to enhance cognitive performance in people under severe stress, such as soldiers in a combat environment or patients with closed-head brain injury. It has fewer side effects than traditional psychostimulants, such as amphetamine or methylphenidate.
Several studies suggest that modafinil improves performance on tasks that require cognitive control, such as the WCST and Hayling sentence completion test. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study of healthy adults undergoing simulated night-shift work, a 4-day regimen of modafinil 200 mg improved error reduction on these tasks compared to placebo, as well as on a version of the digit symbol task that requires cognitive control. These improvements were correlated with increased activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, measured by fMRI.
However, modafinil may increase the risk of developing a skin rash, especially in people with sensitive skin. If you develop a rash while taking modafinil, call your doctor right away. Do not take it with alcohol or medications that can cause drowsiness, such as antidepressants or sleeping pills. Also, avoid taking it if you have a history of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
It is a depressant
Modafinil has been found to enhance cognitive performance in non-sleep-deprived, healthy adults. However, its effect on memory and other aspects of cognition appear to depend on baseline performance. Modafinil does not produce the same dose-dependent, attention and reaction time enhancement seen in classic psychostimulants.
This may be due to its lower affinity for the dopamine reuptake transporter and the lack of direct dopamine effects on working memory processes. Nonetheless, the drug shows promise as a cognitive enhancer in adolescents and young adults. It is currently used as a cognitive enhancer in the Air Force, which is limited to pilots between the ages of 17 and 27.
In studies of normal subjects, modafinil has shown a dose-dependent improvement in pattern recognition memory, digit span recall, and mental digit manipulation (performing addition/subtraction/multiplication in one’s head). It also improves speed of response on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and interference in the Stroop task. It increases the rate of alternation in a sequential alternation task in mice without affecting exploratory activity.
Research suggests that the cognitive benefits of modafinil may be related to its primary actions on catecholaminergic systems, but these neurochemical effects are not well understood. Nevertheless, the drug’s advantages over stimulants are clear. In addition to its waking and mood-brightening effects, it is less prone to side effects such as excess locomotor activity, anxiety, or rebound effects. Moreover, it has been found to be particularly effective in patients with narcolepsy.
